There is a table prayer many of us have used. It goes like this:
God is great, God is good. Let us thank Him for our food.
As we celebrate this day of national thanksgiving, it is my prayer that we join in this prayer and thank the Lord for what we are and have, what we eat and drink, our freedom, family and friend, and so much more.
But the fact of the matter is that we Christians have even more reason to thank God! We have come to know God as loving, gracious, patient beyond understanding, and so much more! He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, made of a woman, made under the Law to redeem those who were under the Law (see Galatians 4:4-5). Jesus willingly submitted Himself to His Father’s will and human injustice to win full forgiveness and complete salvation for everyone who would love and trust in Him.
Full tummies, family gatherings, football (?) and all the other trappings of our celebrations are great – but they are meaningless without our Lord Jesus Christ at the center of our celebration. Have a truly blessed celebration. Happy Thanksgiving!
